Coraid combines 10GB Ethernet with ATA-over-Ethernet to boost net storage speeds.

By Doug Barney

Earlier this month, Coraid, Inc. of San Clemente, CA, announced a new storage appliance that works with 10GB Ethernet. The new EtherDrive SR1661 appliance can handle up to 16 SATA disks for a total of some 16TB of storage.

The appliances use the open ATA-over-Ethernet (AoE) protocol Coraid developed as open source. The AoE protocol transfers data without the overhead of TCP/IP, instead using the flow control built into today’s switches.

The battle now seems to be between high-speed fibre and high-speed Ethernet. Which would you prefer? Let me know at [email protected].
