Many IT shops lack a true sense of priority. You may work for an engineering company, but for some reason IT has to manage storage, e-mail, databases, and network infrastructure. And when an engineer needs help specing a new system, or troubleshooting a graphics card, IT is often too busy just keeping the network up.
Outsourcing is one obvious answer. And there’s a new name in this game you may recognize – Amazon.
Having built a series of monster data centers, Amazon is hoping to extend its efficiencies and infrastructure to others. Amazon Web Services include data processing, database, and storage. While the Amazon service is aimed largely at Web startups, any shop that wants to focus on core competencies should think about outsourcing some of the more mundane aspects of IT. Wouldn’t it be great if your IT shop thought full time about engineering issues?
