AMD (Sunnyvale, CA) recently introduced two new graphics board, the AMD FirePro 2270 and ATI FirePro V5800 DVI, the latter a variation on the previously announced ATI FirePro V5800. AMD says that both of these new graphics cards were designed for professionals who require the ability to view and interact with multiple applications simultaneously in such industries as engineering, design, medical, and financial.

“Because of their superior power consumption and multi-display capabilities, solutions based on the AMD FirePro 2270 and ATI FirePro V5800 DVI deliver strong value for financial, medical, and corporate workstation environments,” said Janet Matsuda, general manager, AMD Professional Graphics in a prepared press statement.

As AMD’s only low-profile, passively cooled, dual-display graphics card, the AMD FirePro 2270 features a fan-less, energy efficient design that consumes 15 watts of power at maximum and less than 10 watts on average. AMD says that its AMD FirePro 2270 helps prevent system slowdowns by enabling efficient multitasking across multiple applications, including graphics-intensive applications. Legacy support for DisplayPort, DVI, and VGA connectivity allows for integration into existing installations.

“With its low profile half-length design,” said Mitchel Furman, a senior product manager at AMD in a statement made to Desktop Engineering, “the FirePro 2270 is ideal solution for users who need to use the smallest of systems but still demand the reliability and stability of all FirePro products.”

The ATI FirePro V5800, according to AMD, is engineered for professionals working with a broad range of applications, such as 3D CAD,  medium to large data sets, and advanced visual effects. This full-length,  single-slot board features three independent video outputs (two DisplayPort and one dual-link DVI) with ATI Eyefinity technology. (AMD’s ATI Eyefinity technology enables you to run independent and simultaneous displays with a single graphics card.) The ATI FirePro V5800’s features include 1GB GDDR5 memory, 64 GB/s bandwidth, maximum resolution of 2560x1600 at 60Hz, and DirectX, OpenGL, and Shader Model support. Power consumption is 75W maximum.

The new DVI version of ATI FirePro V5800 board is designed for driving two high-resolution dual-link DVI displays. “The FirePro 5800 DVI introduces dual dual link DVI support for those who still have high res DVI monitors and are not looking for any dongles to connect them with,”  explained Furman to Desktop Engineering.

With the ATI FirePro V5800 DVI, users in fields ranging from CAD to medical imaging to DCC are said to be able to stretch one image or application across two 30-inch screens. Alternatively, these users can view and interact with data from one or more application on single display while animating, viewing, or manipulating a model on a second. The ATI FirePro V5800 DVI delivers a 30-bit display pipeline to enable increased color reproduction,  and it supports packed pixel mode for usages like dual 5MP medical displays. Resolution is 2560x2048 at 60Hz with packed pixel mode.

Both the AMD FirePro 2270 and the ATI FirePro V5800 DVI are Energy Star 5.0-compliant, and all ATI FirePro cards work with Windows 7,  Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Linux operating systems. Pricing for the AMD FirePro 2270 starts at $149 SEP while ATI FirePro V5800 DVI begins at $469 SEP.
