CIMdata has released a new PLM Program Review titled “Autodesk’s Digital Prototyping for Manufacturing Program.” This review presents CIMdata’s perspectives on the use of 3D design, analysis, prototyping,  and simulation to support manufacturing engineering in the overall product development lifecycle in general, and the specific components of Autodesk’s manufacturing program.

This paper presents the business case for an accessible manufacturing engineering solution that is integrated with a 3D CAD and simulation environment. This review provides CIMdata’s perspective on Autodesk’s digital manufacturing program.

“Autodesk’s solution offering in this area is evolving substantially by both expanding existing manufacturing and digital prototyping capabilities and incorporating capabilities from Autodesk’s Architecture,  Engineering & Construction Solutions group that directly address factory design,” according to John MacKrell, CIMdata vice president.

Currently, Autodesk’s capabilities are focused on factory and plant floor layout as opposed to sophisticated factory simulation and other high-end digital manufacturing capabilities. In this paper, CIMdata provides its own reflections as well as describing the experiences of two Autodesk customers whom CIMdata interviewed to gain an understanding of their perceptions of Autodesk’s technologies and program.
