The event hosted speakers from The Boeing Company, Lockheed Martin, National Institute of Standards and Technology and more.

The Coordinate Metrology Society (CMS) held its annual conference this year in Charleston, SC. The event marked its 30th anniversary, and had a record-breaking number of 3D measurement professionals and metrologists, the society stated.

The week-long conference covers problems, solutions and the latest technology advancements for service providers and OEM (original equipment manufacturers) of close-tolerance, industrial coordinate measurement systems, software and peripherals.

The keynote address was given by William Gessler, telescope and site manager for the LSST (Large Synoptic Survey Telescope) Project. His presentation, titled “Metrology Systems Enable Big Science,” discussed how telescopes were among the first metrology system to help scientists understand the universe.

Throughout the week, 24 additional presenters spoke on topics such as the absolute positioning of robots, automated production measurement of an auto welding line, comparing optical vision systems and more. Companies on the speaking roster included The Boeing Company, Lockheed Martin, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Rolls Royce and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

The CMS also launched its Level-Two Certification, a hands-on performance examination for users of portable CMMs (coordinate measuring machines). In order to take the exam, applicants must have a Level-One Certificiation, two years basic experience on an articulating arm, a complete application and two references.
