Dassault Systemes (DS; Paris, France) released Abaqus BioRID II (Biofidelic Rear Impact Dummy II) from SIMULIA (Providence, RI). SIMULIA’s 3D BioRID II dummy model is used by the automotive industry during the design phase of seats and head restraints to assess and reduce the risk of neck/whiplash injuries resulting from rear-end vehicle collisions.

The new Abaqus BioRID II model takes advantage of Abaqus technology to represent the complex neck and spine construction of the physical BioRID II dummy through realistic simulations. This enables accurate, yet computationally efficient,  simulation of the accelerations and loads in the spine, neck, and head during a rear-end collision.
