FARO ScanArm V3

The FARO ScanArm V3 from FARO Technologies (Lake Mary, FL)  integrates a hard probe and a laser-line probe in a single unit, enabling engineers and technicians to digitize objects of interest with either probe interchangeably without removing components, adding attachments, switching to a separate CMM (coordinate measuring machine), or performing other unproductive actions. A seven-axis contact/non-contact measurement device, the ScanArm’s lasers can scan up to 19,200 points per second, making it suitable for most inspection, cloud-to-CAD comparison, rapid prototyping, reverse engineering and 3D modeling applications.

The extra degree of freedom afforded by the ScanArm’s seventh axis allows for optimum scanner positioning to obtain the best possible data, according to the company. For reverse engineering applications, this flexibility enables you to quickly digitize an object to create a fully-surfaced CAD model or rapidly obtain a point-cloud scan of free-form surfaces to triangulate and surface. For non-contact inspection, 3D point clouds of, for example, soft, deformable, and complex shapes can be acquired then aligned to the nominal data.

The ScanArm’s laser line probe has an “Auto Material”  feature that continuously samples the object’s surface and adjusts for optimal scanning automatically, which is said to provide improved scanning of dark and reflective surfaces without coating. Standard features include a pistol grip and, in conjunction with FARO’s Quantum arm, support for a Bluetooth wireless operation, letting you scan without cables or interface boxes.

The ScanArm is compatible with major reverse engineering, point-cloud manipulation, and digital sampling software such as Geomagic, PolyWorks, and Rapidform. It works with FARO’s Quantum, Platinum, and Fusion articulated arms. For complete details, visit FARO Technologies.
