Tony LockwoodFARO Technologies recently announced version 10.5 of its CAM2 Measure 3D metrology software. It has a lot of nifty productivity enhancements that provide reason why it is today’s Pick of the Week, and one of them is really neat. We’ll get to that in a minute.

CAM2 Measure, if you’re unfamiliar, is a robust solution for contact and non-contact 3D scanning. Features include things like image-guided measurement and an “align my part” wizard. You can export reports in various formats and send measurement results to your CAD system or point clouds to a mesh. You can automate repeat inspections for people not well versed in scanning.

CAM2 Measure even has a complementary app for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad users. This lets you do remote measurements, change scanning modes, see real-time results and other useful stuff. Naturally being from FARO, CAM2 Measure connects seamlessly to FARO hardware, including the FaroArm portable 3D measurement arm, the FARO Laser Tracker large-volume 3D measurement system and the FARO ScanArm contact/non-contact portable measurement system.

Which brings us to the big enchilada enhancement: Beginning with CAM2 Measure 10.5, you can connect multiple 3D measurement devices within the same coordinate system and simultaneously scan from each into a single seat of software on your computer. A key feature here is that version 10.5 provides an expanded point cloud capacity that lets you collect over 20 times more data than with previous versions and yet it maintains accelerated processing speeds.

What that means is you can seamlessly scan big items, say a car or my gut, with precise accuracy at high speed – for example millions of points per second if you’re using the FARO Edge ScanArm HD with its blue laser. And not only will you get 3D scanning done faster, you can expand your scanning horizons. Large objects that once challenged your capabilities are simply easier to scan efficiently and cost-effectively. That potentially opens up new lines of business or research for you as well.

CAM2 Measure 10.5 also sees GD&T (geometric dimensioning and tolerancing) enhancements that streamline analysis and visual reporting, and it has the ability to scan trim edges easily. You can learn more about those and other enhancements in CAM2 Measure 10.5 from today’s Pick of the Week write-up. Make it a point to watch the video linked at the end. It’s short, but it’s long on good stuff to know.

Thanks, Pal. – Lockwood
