Dell Round (Round Rock, TX) has introduced two new portable systems — the Latitude D430 notebook and Dell Precision M4300 mobile workstation. Both systems comply with the Environmental Protection Agency’s newest Energy Star 4.0 standard. Both also support Windows Vista, although some variant of Windows XP comes standard.

The Latitude D430 and the Precision M4300 are available with solid-state technology as an option. Dell, saying that it is the first major vendor to offer solid-state drives, reports that its solid-state drives can provide a shock tolerance of up to 1,300 Gs and reduce the probability of failure by more than five times. Other advantages of the solid-state drive according to Dell are that it can improve performance and reduce boot time. The company cites the performance improvement of the Latitude D430 as up to 23 percent with a boot time reduction of up to 34 percent.

The base model of the Latitude D430 offers a 12-inch-wide screen; 1GB, DDR2 SDRAM; 1.20GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor; 533Mhz front side bus; 40GB hard drive; 24X CDRW/DVD; integrated draft 802.11n wireless connectivity; Windows XP Home, and security solutions. Its starting weight is less than three pounds.

Dell says that its engineering-class Precision M4300 portable workstation can provide average performance boosts of up to 110 percent over its predecessor. Base features include a 1.80GHz Intel Core 2 processor, 2MB L2 cache, 1GB of system memory, NVIDIA Quadro FX 360M, graphics accelerator with 512MB of memory, 80GB hard drive, a 24X CD-ROM drive, 802.11n wireless support, and Windows XP Professional.

The Precision M4300 is designed to be a scalable unit that you can customize to your engineering needs. For example, its dual-channel memory offers 36-bit addressing, which lets you leverage all 4GB of system memory if so equipped.

With the introduction of the Latitude D430 and the Precision M4300, Dell says that it delivers the most comprehensive set of Energy Star 4.0 compliant product offerings of any major information-technology company. Buttressing this assertion, it cites recent Energy Star compliancy announcements for its Precision 390, 490, and 690 notebooks, OptiPlex 740 and 745 desktops, and Latitude D630, D531, and D830 notebooks.
