High Tech Bait Delivery System Snags the Big Fish

Fishing experiences spawn the idea for the Bait Bomb.

Who would think that the fishing experiences of the three founding directors of the Bait Bomb would lead to a high tech patented design solution?

That’s how it happened for Ferris-Tech Limited (Coventry,UK),  a hi-tech design and development company founded in 2006 by qualified engineers with a passionate interest in angling and angling products. Taking advantage of state of the art 3D CAD technology, Ferris-Tech has developed what they call the world’s first time-release active bait delivery system to eject fishing bait in a sudden but calculated ‘bomb burst’.

During a Coventry City football match, the three founding directors of the Bait Bomb idea shared their fishing experiences. All three felt that there were limitations of traditional bait feeders and problems trying to create the perfect ground bait mix and keeping the contents intact during the cast and sinking operation.

This discussion led to a patented design of the totally enclosed Bait Bomb, developed using advanced solid and surface modeling technologies from Vero Software plc. Technologists from Coventry University and The Warwick University Manufacturing and Design Group produced rapid prototyping models continually throughout the design lifecycle to test the aerodynamic performance of the design. Flight stability was improved throughout the testing process, by modifying the CAD designs by adding golf ball like dimples and tail fins. They also worked on the internal weight balance to ensure the Bait Bomb always fell ‘right side up’  on every cast.

VISI software from Vero provided freedom from constraints needed in this manufacturing environment. Once the CAD design was finalized, it was still necessary to design the bio-degradable composite clip that activates the time bomb effect.

The way this works is that once the Bait Bomb has entered the water, the clip dissolves and the Bait Bomb springs open using a spring-loaded hinge. The internal fingers distribute the bait around the hook and create a bait cloud to attract the attention of the fish.

Ferris-Tech and Vero worked together to create the aerodynamic design that is mounted concentrically on the line to ensure the Bait Bomb can be cast further and with greater accuracy than existing feeders. Easy casting plus the hydrodynamics make the Bait Bomb rise to the surface immediately when you start reeling it in. In this way, the open bait bomb returns to you over the surface of the water like a boat, and so it doesn’t allow the line to get caught on underwater objects such as rocks or weeds.

Officially released this year at the Go Fishing exhibition held at the Birmingham NEC, the Bait Bomb has already sold over 2,000 units.
