Autodesk (San Rafael, CA) has named Genmar Yacht Group as the Autodesk Inventor of the Month for September 2008.
Autodesk Inventor software was used to design the new Marquis 420 Sport Coupe, recognized as the best new yacht in its class at the 2008 Miami International Boat Show. Genmar Yacht Group, LLC, which manufactures luxury yachts under the Carver and Marquis brand names, used Inventor to check for potential incompatibility among different parts and components of their yacht, resolving design issues before the model reaches the manufacturing stage.
Genmar Yacht Group is unusual in that it designs and builds most of the components that go into its yachts such as mechanical and electrical systems, cabinets, rails and upholstery. By digitally documenting each part of the design using Inventor, then storing them in Autodesk Vault, a data management tool that helps manage and securely store design data in a central location, the company reduces the amount of time it takes to find, re-use and reference data.
In addition, digital data makes it possible for Genmar Yacht Group to refresh its product lines and launch more new models annually. It took only 12 months for the company to develop three different models of new Marquis brand products— a 40 foot, a 50 foot, and a 72 foot yacht—to bring to the Miami International Boat Show.
The 420 Marquis Sport Coupe, winner of the “Best in Year” award, featured quality treatments such as exotic African Zebrano hardwood cabinetry with high gloss quality lacquered trim, wooden cabin sole and designer selected fixtures and appointments. These are signature touches for Marquis brand yachts that distinguish Genmar’s products from others on the market.
Headquartered in Pulaski, Wisconsin, Genmar Yacht Group manufactures luxury yachts and is a division of Genmar Holdings, Inc., a premier builder of recreational boats.
Robert “Buzz” Kross, senior vice president of Autodesk Manufacturing Solutions, said that digital prototyping allows Genmar Yacht Group to keep ‘topping’ itself with stunning new product offerings that attract consumers.
The Inventor of the Month program is designed to recognize the most innovative design and engineering advancements made by the extensive community using Autodesk Inventor software, known as the foundation of the Autodesk solution for Digital Prototyping. Winners are chosen for their engineering excellence and innovation from more than 800,000 users of Autodesk Inventor software each month. A digital prototype is a realistic 3D digital simulation of the entire end product, which negates the need for constructing physical prototypes as it virtually optimizes and validates a product before it is built.
