With much fanfare, Metris (Leuven, Belgium)  premieres the LC60D, a next-generation digital 3D line scanner, at IMTS 08 in Chicago in September. There the company will demonstrate the scanner’s scanning productivity,  performance and robustness. The LC60D boasts state-of-the-art digital technology and powerful on-board data processing, more than tripling today’s common scan rates, according to the company press material. By scanning parts and streaming part geometry and model data into the design-through-manufacturing data flow, the LC60D strengthens and accelerates the Digital Inspection Process.

The LC60D offers a significant improvement in productivity over its predecessor, the LC50. The LC60D speeds up the image acquisition frame rate from 25 to 75 Hertz. Moreover, the 15 percent wider laser stripe and 17 percent higher point resolution bring the scan speed of the LC60D to 75,000 non-interpolated points per second.

Because of the large number of measurement points, the surface area that the scanner is able to capture and process is much greater. LC60D operators find that they can finish scanning jobs up to 3 times faster because of this improvement. The inspection cycle time for free form parts can be compressed drastically, and more features on a product can be scanned simultaneously.
