National Science Foundation Invests in Wireless Research

The National Science Foundation will invest more than $400 million over the next seven years to support wireless research and develop platforms for advanced wireless research as part of the White House’s Advanced Wireless Research Initiatives.

These investments will support the research community in experimenting with and testing novel technologies, applications and services capable of making wireless communication faster, smarter, more responsive and more robust, a press release states.

According to the NSF, the organization has committed to achieve the following goals:

• platforms for advanced wireless research;
• open challenges to enhance wireless broadband connectivity;
• joint solicitation with Intel on information-centric wireless edge networks;
• joint solicitation with the Academy of Finland on wireless innovation between Finland and the U.S.;
• DARPA Spectrum Collaboration Challenge; and
• NSF workshop on ultra-low latency networks.
