Sun and Fujitsu Expand SPARC Enterprise Server Line

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Santa Clara, CA)and Fujitsu Limited (Tokyo, Japan; http://www.fujitsu.com) expanded the Sun andFujitsu SPARC Enterprise server line with the introduction of two new systemsbased on the UltraSPARC T2 Plus processor.

The third-generation CMT SPARC Enterprise T5140 and T5240servers’ performance and scalability help customers consolidate the datacenterinto an ultra-dense, energy efficient compute environment, optimized, andmanaged by the Solaris 10 OS. The SPARC Enterprise T5140 and T5240 serversdeliver up to 16 times higher compute density than competitive two-socket x86systems and up to 32 times higher compute density than competitive four-socketx86 systems. According to the companies, the Sun and Fujitsu SPARC EnterpriseT5140 and T5240 servers provide up to three times more performance thancompetitive RISC systems in half the space.

The SPARC Enterprise T5140 and T5240 servers are said to bethe first dual-socket, general-purpose servers powered by the UltraSPARC T2 Plusprocessor. The servers feature up to 128 compute threads in compact one- ortwo-rack units and two to four times more memory and internal disk capacity thancompetitive x86 systems.

The SPARC Enterprise T5140 and T5240 servers offer flexible,open source, no-cost virtualization technologies with Solaris Containers andLogical Domains (LDoms).

In addition to Sun and Fujitsu offering a range of developertools including CoolTools  and Sun Studio 12 software,they also announced new offerings providing virtualization services to runSolaris 8 and Solaris 9 applications and help enable the simple transfer ofapplications to the latest CMT systems running the Solaris 10 OS.
