Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) has added 14 new applications in the Network.com Application Catalog, a collection of online grid-enabled applications that are available from Network.com‘s Sun Grid compute utility service on a pay-per-use basis.

Sun s new partner program, Sun Network.com Connection, is for independent software vendors (ISVs) to create and expand their on-demand service offerings to end-users at a lower risk and cost with access to new channels; and Network.com’s international availability is expanding. And in addition to the Solaris 10 OS-based grid platform, Network.com is providing developers and open source communities with tools, resources, and an active grid developer community that helps them build and test on-demand applications.

Sun Microsystems also announced an agreement to acquire innotek (Weinstadt, Germany), provider of open source virtualization software called VirtualBox. By enabling developers to more efficiently build, test, and run applications on multiple platforms, VirtualBox will extend the Sun xVM platform onto the desktop and strengthen Sun’s leadership in the virtualization market. This software is available for all major operating systems at VirtualBox and openxVM. The agreement to acquire innotek follows Sun’s announcement on January 16 of a definitive agreement to acquire MySQL, one of the world’s most popular open source databases.

The Sun xVM family of products integrates virtualization and management to help customers better manage both physical and virtualized assets across heterogeneous environments. More information about Sun xVM solutions, go to Sun Microsystems, Inc.
