Tecplot, Inc. (Bellevue, WA) released Tecplot Focus 2008, an upgrade of its all-purpose engineering plotting software that includes Python scripting, for engineers who require additional analysis (FFTs, splines, statistical functions, etc.) or more scripting flexibility.

Python is an open-source, object-oriented programming language that offers strong support for integration with other languages and tools and comes with extensive standard libraries. Tecplot Focus 2008 users can now leverage the extensive set of open-source libraries that are now available.

Other new features and user-requested enhancements in Tecplot Focus 2008 include an u pdated user interface with frequently used tools now organized on the menu bar; new animation options including throttling frame rate, loop and bounce modes; support for eight color map groups per frame. Tecplot 360 Focus is available for Windows (XP, Vista), Mac OS X, and Linux. Annual license pricing starts at $1,500 in the U.S.

Tecplot also released Tecplot 360 2008, its flagship product for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and numerical simulation visualization, which offers more postprocessing options and native loading of polyhedral meshes. With Python scripting, Tecplot 360 2008 users can leverage the extensive set of open-source libraries that are now available.

Tecplot 360 2008’s new features also include native, arbitrary polyhedral element support, and natively loads polyhedral meshes for data from sources such as ANSYS Fluent, STAR-CCM+, and Tecplot’s own format; the ability to share 3D results in the X3D open source standard; add-ons to synchronize transient animations among multiple frames, perform a time-series plot, extract over time, and edit solution time.

Tecplot 360 2008 is available for Windows (XP, Vista), Mac OS X, Linux, and Unix. Annual license pricing starts at $3,000 in the U.S.
