This month the University of Illinois announced plans to buy, install, and use Blue Waters, a petaflop supercomputer to be built by Armonk, NY-based IBM Corp.

But this ain’t like calling up Dell and ordering up a PowerEdge. The Blue Waters supercomputer won’t be up and running until 2011.

Hopefully Blue Waters will be worth the wait, as it is four times faster than Blue Gene/L, another IBM machine that is reportedly today’s fastest machine.

Once installed, Blue Waters is expected to work on climate modeling, the origins of the universe, and other perplexing problems.
